The Sepulveda Basin's ponds and flood control channels sit right along Van Nuys' western edge, and standing water there means mosquito pressure runs higher here than in cities further from the basin, worst from July through September.
Older single family blocks away from the Civic Center see the same roof rat pattern as the rest of the Valley floor, moving into attics and garages once the weather cools in October, plus the usual roach activity around older plumbing in homes that have not been repiped.
