Spiders in Valley homes

Most spiders around a Valley home are harmless, but black widows and their less known relative, the brown widow, are common enough in garages and patio furniture that we treat for them as part of general service. Both build messy, low webs in spots that don't get disturbed often, which is exactly where people reach with a bare hand.

How to tell it's this one

  • Black widow females are shiny black with a red hourglass mark on the underside of the abdomen
  • Brown widows are tan to brown with an orange or yellow hourglass and a distinctive spiky egg sac
  • A messy, irregular web tucked low in a corner, not the neat wheel shaped web of a garden spider
  • Webs built in undisturbed spots like under patio furniture, in garages and behind stored boxes
  • Egg sacs that look like small round pouches attached to the web

Right now

What to do right now

  1. 1Shake out shoes, gloves and anything stored in the garage before handling
  2. 2Wear gloves when moving patio furniture or boxes that have sat untouched
  3. 3Knock down webs you see, an empty web often gets rebuilt in the same spot so treatment matters more than sweeping
  4. 4Keep clutter off garage floors and shelves where webs go unnoticed
What we do about it

How Facility handles spiders

Spider control is included in general pest service rather than sold separately. At every visit we knock down webs and egg sacs in garages, eaves, meter boxes and patio furniture, then treat those same spots so a new web doesn't just rebuild in the same corner. Because widow spiders favor undisturbed clutter, we'll flag areas of the garage or yard worth clearing out. All backed by our 30 day guarantee.

Spiders questions

How do I tell a black widow from a brown widow?

Black widow females are shiny black with a red hourglass mark on the underside of the abdomen. Brown widows are tan to brown with an orange or yellow hourglass and build a distinctive spiky, round egg sac, compared to the smoother egg sac of a black widow. Both build messy, low webs.

Is a black widow bite dangerous?

A black widow bite can cause real pain, cramping and swelling and should be taken seriously, especially for children, older adults or anyone with health conditions, but bites are rarely fatal with medical care. If you're bitten, wash the area and seek medical attention rather than waiting to see how it develops.

Why do I keep finding widow spiders in my garage?

Garages offer exactly what widow spiders want, dark, undisturbed corners, clutter to hide in and few visitors. Boxes, tools and patio furniture that sit untouched for weeks give them a safe place to build a web and lay eggs, which is why the same garage often has repeat activity if it isn't treated.

Do spiders mean I have other pests?

Sometimes. Spiders are predators, so a heavier spider presence can mean there's a decent insect population nearby for them to feed on. It's not a guarantee of a bigger pest problem, but a lot of spider webs in one area is worth a closer look at what's drawing them there.

Does general pest service cover spiders?

Yes, spider control is included as part of general pest service rather than sold as a separate add on. Every visit includes knocking down webs and egg sacs in garages, eaves and patio areas and treating those same spots so activity doesn't just rebuild in the same corner.
